How to buy watersports well
Kayaks and SUPs are seasonal in the truest sense: retailers over-order for summer and discount hard from late February. Anaconda and BCF both run members-only pricing on kayaks that beats anything else in the country, and a $600 saving on a pedal kayak is not unusual at the end of the season.
Tow toys (tubes, skis, kneeboards) follow the same pattern with smaller numbers. The best time to buy is when you don't need them; the worst time is the week before Christmas.
Dry bags, deck bags and paddling accessories are impulse-priced and heavily promoted. We feature them only when the per-item price is a real outlier.
The checklist
- For kayaks, check the weight capacity includes you plus gear plus a big fish.
- Confirm whether the seat, paddle and pedal drive are included in the sale price.
- Measure your roof racks or garage before you buy a 4-metre kayak online.
- Tow tubes: check the rating (1, 2 or 3 riders) and whether a tow rope is included.
