How to buy anchoring & mooring well
Anchoring gear is heavy, which means it's expensive to ship, which means the big chandleries with physical stores (Whitworths, Bosun's Locker, Boat Warehouse) tend to win on price here. Australian-made anchors from Anchor Right and Manson are rarely discounted, so when a genuine promotion appears it is worth acting on.
Drum anchor winches are the biggest-ticket item in this category and see two or three real promotions a year, usually tied to a brand's new model. Confirm the winch is rated for your boat length and that the price includes the deck mount and control switch.
Rope and chain are commodities: price per metre is what matters, and the difference between a sale and everyday price is small. We only feature them when the discount is large.
The checklist
- Match the anchor weight to your boat length and the bottom you usually anchor in.
- Check galvanised versus stainless: stainless looks better and costs three times as much.
- For winches, confirm the rope and chain size the drum is designed for.
- Check what mounting hardware and switches are included.
- Fenders: compare the inflated size, not the deflated packaging.
