Marine apparel discounts are almost entirely about colourways. Musto, Gill, Zhik and Helly Hansen refresh colours each year, and the previous year's jacket is identical in performance at 30 to 40% off. Whitworths and Anaconda clear these every spring and autumn.
Sun protection is the exception: UPF50 fishing shirts are competitively priced all year by the tackle retailers, so we only feature them on multi-buy deals.
Deck shoes and boots are size-dependent bargains. A great price on a boot that's only left in size 8 is not a deal for most people, so we note remaining sizes where the newsletter states them.
The checklist
- Check remaining sizes before you get excited about a clearance price.
- For wet-weather gear, compare the waterproof rating (in mm) and whether seams are taped.
- Sun shirts: look for UPF50+ and check the fabric weight for your climate.
- Deck shoes: non-marking soles are essential on fibreglass.
- Gloves: check whether they're sailing (reinforced palm) or fishing (grip and puncture) gloves.
