How to buy safety well
Safety equipment in Australia is regulated by the states, and the mandatory kit differs depending on where you launch and how far offshore you go. A deal on a Level 50 PFD is not a deal if your state requires Level 100 for the water you fish. Check the requirements for your state on our Resources page before you buy.
Inflatable PFDs are the exception to the 'never on sale' rule for safety gear: retailers clear old colourways and superseded models every spring, and a twin pack is almost always cheaper per jacket than two singles. Make sure the model is AS 4758 certified and check the servicing interval.
EPIRBs and PLBs must be registered with AMSA (it's free). An Australian-made GME beacon on sale is one of the best-value purchases any offshore boatie can make, and the ten-year battery makes the per-year cost trivial.
The checklist
- Check the item is certified to the relevant Australian Standard (AS 4758 for PFDs).
- Confirm it meets your state's requirements for where you actually boat.
- Register any beacon with AMSA on the day it arrives.
- Check expiry dates on flares and inflatable PFD cylinders before accepting a clearance deal.
- For twin packs, check both jackets are the size you need.
