How to buy outboards & power well
New outboards rarely go on sale in the traditional sense; dealers discount through bonus warranty, free rigging or trade-in offers, and those show up in dealer newsletters rather than on the big retail sites. Where you do see straight price cuts is on small tender-sized four-strokes, electric trolling motors and the 12V ecosystem around them.
Battery pricing swings a lot. Lithium (LiFePO4) prices have been falling year on year and the sale price on last season's stock is often lower than the everyday price of an equivalent AGM battery. Check the cycle-life rating and whether the BMS supports low-temperature charging if you're in the southern states.
Chargers are the quiet bargain of this category. Multi-stage chargers from Projecta, CTEK and Victron drop 25 to 35% at end of quarter, and a good charger is the cheapest way to double the life of an expensive battery.
The checklist
- For outboards, ask what rigging, controls and propeller are included in the price.
- Check the shaft length matches your transom (S, L or XL).
- For batteries, compare amp-hours at the same discharge rate, not the headline number.
- Make sure a lithium battery's BMS suits your existing charger, or budget for a new one.
- Trolling motor thrust: roughly 2 lb per 100 lb of loaded boat weight is the usual rule of thumb.
