How to buy maintenance well
Consumables have predictable price cycles. Genuine outboard oil (Yamalube, Quicksilver, Suzuki) goes on promotion around servicing season in spring, and buying two years' worth at 30% off is a legitimately good move. Antifoul follows the same pattern before haul-out season.
Fit-out hardware from RAILBLAZA, Scotty and Rod Holders Australia is rarely discounted at the specialist level but appears in the big chandleries' catalogues at 20 to 30% off, usually as part of a fishing-fit-out promotion.
Covers and upholstery are worth waiting for. Semi-custom boat covers drop sharply at end of season, and the difference between a $180 and a $280 cover is often just the colour.
The checklist
- Oil: confirm the spec (TC-W3 for two-stroke, FC-W for four-stroke) matches your engine.
- Antifoul: check it's suitable for aluminium hulls if that's what you have.
- Covers: measure centreline length and beam, and check the cover style suits your windscreen.
- For mounts and hardware, check the base is compatible with accessories you already own.
- Compare per-litre pricing on cleaners; concentrates usually win.
